FK Your Diet feeds victims of Hurricane Ian in Southwest Florida

“Nothing’s left.”
“Looting.”
“Uncertain future.”
So read the headlines nearly two weeks after Hurricane Ian surged into Fort Myers, devastating coastal communities, leaving homes and businesses without power and water in many cases. Without walls and roofs in the worst of them.
Doug Miller and Amy Eldridge have been driving amid these neighborhoods every day in the storm’s wake.
“It’s like these houses threw up,” Miller told the Orlando Sentinel. “Everything that was on the inside is on the outside now. This area…” He trails off for a moment, then the words come. “It just got wrecked.”
Included in the casualties, minor compared to some, is their restaurant, FK Your Diet Fort Myers, the first of their small, five-shop empire. There’s no power. There’s no water. They lost a few windows and their sign — the thick steel beam that held it was bent in the force of the wind — was obliterated.
But the couple, along with a small army of volunteers and staffers whose own homes were damaged or destroyed during the storm, has been feeding the community nonetheless.
With donations from area restaurants, businesses and private citizens — but mostly, they say, with their own money — they’ve been serving up to 7,000 hot meals a day from a makeshift kitchen, powered by generators and batteries…
